Kardeş Türküler is a Turkish band we got to know and sometimes had the honour to perform with while living in Istanbul. We always enjoyed the joyful and powerful music as much as the multicultural message they convey, as they perform music from all traditions/languages from Turkey (including Turkish, Armenian, Arabic, Kurdish, Laz, etc)
The original song was written in Kurdish and Arabic, we got the Arabic final part adapted by our dear friend Sten Charbonneau into Breton with whom we wrote Inês album.
Materials include acrylics, aquarelles types of paints, natural pigments and made from coal and ashes, natural pigments from stones, collage elements, acrylic pens,… It was painted between end of February and 5th of March 2021.

Our project on the mysterious “protest song” collab is making progress, we’re almost done with the vocals and we’ll start the real editing phase tomorrow. In the meantime, and to keep you happy, we created this small music/art/video piece.
Notre projet de vidéo collaborative pour notre mystérieuse “protest song” avance, on termine les voix demain, et on attaque le gros du montage vidéo dans la foulée. En attendant, et sans aucune annonce on vous a préparé ce petit projet qui mêle musique/vidéo/art.
This song is one of the many variations on the same theme (Skolvan’s curse after his death, and his return to Earth to ask his mother for forgiveness). Researches suggest that Skolan would be Merlin, and the curse an allegory of the power fight between Christianity over the ancient pagan and Druidic traditions. Similar verses are found in Welsh, Scottish and Irish variations. We included the lyrics in the video with basic French and English translations. The skies, clouds and small lakes on the video were all filmed along February 2021 in different areas of our village Plougras.
Cette chanson est une des nombreuses variations sur le thème de Skolvan (ou le merci de l’âme), Skolvan revient après sa mort demander le pardon de sa mère pour ses forfaits. Skolvan pourrait être Merlin lui aussi maudit, et symboliser les luttes de pouvoir entre l’église chrétienne et l’ancienne religion druidique. Nous avons ajouté le texte dans les sous-titres, avec les traductions (libres) en anglais et en français.On a tous les deux eu beaucoup de plaisir à préparer ce projet. Les nuages, ciel et étangs ont tous été filmés au cours du mois de février 2021 sur notre commune (Plougras).

Along our travels we certainly heard plenty of songs, and we started recording some of them that we entend to release as video projects for now. This one is in Turkish, from the Black Sea area close to Georgia, and actually the version we worked from initially was from the Georgian artist Lela Tsurtsumia.
Depuis le temps que nous voyageons pour écouter des chansons, il nous prend parfois l’envie de les enregistrer aussi, de se les approprier. Nous en avons plusieurs en cours, que nous allons pour le moment sortir sous forme de projets vidéos. Cette première chanson vient de la Mer Noire, à l’Est et pas très loin de la Géorgie, et elle est en Turc. La première version que nous avons entendu était celle de l’artiste géorgienne Lela Tsurtsumia.
The video expresses our love for summer in the Dnieper islands and is a celebration of its peaceful beauty and presence. We heard after the video was finished of a similar tradition at solstice time of crown flowers sent to the river – but it is *almost* a coincidence that our video is similar 😉 We’ll tell you more about it very soon in our next vlog.
Le vidéo est un ode à notre amour pour la beauté majestueuse du Dniepr et de ses îles au cœur de la ville de Kiev, que nous nous apprêtons à quitter. C’est lorsque nous l’avons terminée que l’on nous parlé de la tradition du Solstice d’été (Kupala) au cours de laquelle les jeunes filles confient leur couronne de fleurs au fleuve. C’est une coïncidence un peu magique, et on vous la raconte en détail très vite 🙂

The result of a wonderful beautiful ecstatic adventure. That really indeed started around 2014 while we were working on B album in Greece. We’ll put some day a video up to explain that long very long story !

Both sides of a scene yesterday on the left bank of Kiev, let’s have a closer look at this quite rich scene.
Doing the playback for our “running up that hill” video, a friend we met and performed with some years ago in Kiev, he’s from Moldova, worked for Diwan school in Paris (Breton language schools), and was wearing a traditional Georgian hat for the occasion. He’s also a big fan of Breton music 😉
Very typical Astrakan story I guess 😉
Technicaly: 2 mobile phones, one used to film (the best quality one, with the back lens that is always better quality), the 2nd hold by a kind assistant is playing the video, loud enough, with the lyrics 😉 If you don’t have an assistant but can borrow a phone, you can tape them to a stick, a rod, a shelve if you’re at home… It’s better to have the one filming bellow, and the one with the lyrics video above (for the sake of the eyes direction)
Also be mindful of not closing the little sound holes with either your fingers or the tape you’re using The video below shows a variation, but it’s in French, with some philosophical talking from me about self-image, confidence on camera. Let us know if you’d be interested or need something similar in English, and we’d happily do it.
Pile ou face hier, rive gauche de Kiev, un beau moment que l’on vous décrypte 😉 Humainement : un super musicien que l’on voit trop peu, on s’est rencontrés à Kiev, il y a longtemps, il est Moldave, a travaillé à l’école Diwan de Paris, et portait un chapeau traditionnel géorgien pour l’occasion. Ha, et il adore la musique bretonne !
Qui d’autre qu’Astrakan pour vous conter des histoires pareilles?
Techniquement :
Système hyper efficace qui a fait ses preuves hier, 2 téléphones : un qui filme, un tenu par un gentil assistant avec la vidéo pour le texte et le son. Si on n’a pas l’assistant, on peut lui emprunter le 2ème téléphone et fixer l’un au-dessus de l’autre sur… un manche, un poteau, une étagère si on est à l’intérieur… Le fait qu’ils soient l’un sous l’autre (c’est mieux le texte au dessus) permettent de garder le regard pas trop éloigné de l’objectif. Il faut juste faire attention de ne pas boucher les petits trous du son avec les doigts ou le scotch 😉
La vidéo montre une variante en intérieur avec vidéo et texte sur un écrand’ordinateur, pour quand on ne peut pas sortir ou que l’on n’a pas d’assistant. Simone y aborde aussi les aspects psychologiques de se filmer, qui peuvent toucher l’image de soi, l’estime de soi, etc…

It’s in French we know! But, you can still follow along, and, Simone is creating a video about more general Breton pronunciation, that can be interesting for you and can then give you some tips to follow with more ease on whatever Breton song you would be learning from its written version.
